Exploring Surface Design
No more repeating the same surface designs. Start creating your own.
This program blends technique, experimentation, and cross-textile inspiration to help you build precision, expand your creative range, and create original felt with confidence.

AÂ program for curious, explorer felt makers!Â
Â
This is for you if you’re ready to move beyond following instructions and start exploring your own creative direction.
- Your work feels a bit predictable, and you want it to become more distinctive
- You can follow tutorials, but designing your own projects still feels out of reach
- You find yourself repeating the same techniques and aren’t sure how to grow
- When something doesn’t work, you’re not always sure why, and you want more control and understanding
Â
You don’t need to be advanced, but you do need a solid foundation.
You’ll get the most out of this program if you’re already comfortable with the basics of wet felting: layout, resist work, and the overall process. We won’t be covering foundational techniques.
Â
This is not a project-based course.
If you’re looking for step-by-step projects to follow, this may not be the right fit. Though we will be felting several projects, this program is about going deeper, so you can design, experiment, and create with intention.
Â
What you’ll be able to do after this program
- Create felt that is clean, even, and refined, with strong edges and intentional thickness
- Work with greater precision and control, understanding what’s happening at each stage of the process
- Use pre-felt confidently as a design tool to build more complex and layered surfaces
- Design your own surface patterns, scale them appropriately, and apply them successfully to both flat and 3D forms
- Make better material choices based on how different fibers, wool types, and formats behave
- Build harmonious palettes and control color in your work, avoiding unwanted fiber migration and “muddy” results
- Explore and create woven designs on both flat and 3D felt
- Add texture and 3D structures through layering, relief techniques, and surface manipulation
- Combine nuno felting techniques, and fabric manipulation to expand your creative possibilities

The modules
The program is structured in progressive modules, each focusing on a different approach to surface design:
Module 1 — Patchwork Felt
Build precision and control while learning to create clean, well-constructed surfaces
Module 2 — Woven Felt
Explore woven structures and understand how pattern, color, and construction interact
Module 3 — Relief Felt
Add depth and dimension through layering, encapsulation, and surface development
Module 4 — Felt Manipulation
Discover how folding, stitching, and fabric integration can transform your surfaces
Module 5 — Your Signature ProjectÂ
Bring everything together to design and create a piece that reflects your own voice
