Why working on complex projects too soon can lead to frustration…

If you haven't yet developed a good understanding of the basic forms and how they behave, a complex project means learning two things at once. You’re trying to create the project while also developing the foundational skills it relies on.

So, you may follow every step of the instructions and still find that your piece doesn't look or behave like what you expected.

You watch the instructor make the project look effortless, and you don’t understand where the issue is. Unfortunately, this may convince you that wet felting is not for you (which is exactly what we don't want to happen!).

When in fact, the issue may simply be that you haven't yet developed the foundational skills that allow you to concentrate on the new project, instead of struggling with the basics at the same time.

But, hey, this is easy to solve!

Just invest some time to work on the building blocks of felt.

When you know how the basic forms behave, how they can be joined, and what makes a connection strong and clean, you have much more control over the finished piece.

You also become better equipped to deal with the moments when things don't go exactly according to the instructions (and in wet felting, they inevitably won't!).

Here’s where learning the basics stops being about making practice pieces and starts becoming about being able to make more complex things successfully.

Following instructions can teach you how to make one particular project, but understanding how felted forms connect gives you the foundation to make, adapt and design many different projects.

 What you'll create

Rings & Chains 

Learn how to felt strong, well-shaped rings and connect them into chains, while exploring different sizes and  shapes, and understanding how felting technique and shrinkage affect the final result.

Horizontal Connections

Learn how to create two types of clean, strong horizontal connections, while planning your layout to achieve neatly finished edges without cutting. Explore how these connections can be used for handles, as well as decorative and sculptural felt.

Vertical Connections

Learn how to create clean, strong vertical connections, while exploring how to keep the cords in position and work with a more intricate layout. Develop the control needed to achieve a well-felted, secure connection.

By the end of this class, you'll not only have learned a few ways of attaching felt handles, but also have a new way of thinking about how felt elements connect to each other.
