Q&A: Pre-felts

Mar 21, 2026

In the last couple of weeks, we’ve been talking about pre-felts. Today, I’m continuing this series on pre-felts and I’d like to answer some questions that I got about the topic.

Here are the questions I’m asking in this video:

  • I am very curious about pre-felts, especially as a new wet felter. At which stage of the process can you consider it a pre-felt?  I’d like to create some pre-felt in order to place on my work and felt everything together. How do I do that?
  • Do you have any advice on how to deal with one color fiber bleeding into another? I made a Christmas stocking and the red bled into the white top.
  • If you want to make very defined edges, butting up against each other, do you actually cut the pre-felt?  What about the raw edges?  Or how do you get a straight solid edge?
  • How do I solve the problem if my pre-felt doesn’t stick properly to the base?
  • Can you use a sander to make pre-felts?
  • I’m wondering if I can layer two sheets of prefelt on top of each other and wet felt? Will they bind together? If yes, how many layers could you successfully layer and wet felt together?

I hope you find them useful too!
