Should you use a sander for wet felting? Here's what you need to know

May 03, 2026

Nervous about mixing water and electricity? I was too!

I've been wet felting for a long time, but it took me until three years ago to finally try working with a sander. And honestly? I wish I hadn't waited so long.

Is it worth it?

Not for every project. But for nuno felting and felting with viscose fiber, a sander can be a real gamechanger. Both techniques require a lot of time and energy to get the fibers to attach properly, and the pressure of a sander makes that so much easier.

What should you look for?

Not all sanders are created equal and since these machines are designed for woodworking, there are a few things that matter specifically for felt makers: weight, noise and vibration level, and variable speed. Get any of these wrong and you’ll struggle to use the machine.

In this week's video, I go into all the details, including which models other felt makers recommend most.

This video is part of a series on sanding, and I've also put together a free guide with everything in one place.

If you don’t want to wait for the other videos or if you want a short guide that you can refer to when you’re planning to sand your project…
