Why does Zsofia say the object is only half the story?

I often share stories about the influence that other felt makers have had in my own artistic felting journey. You’ve heard me talk about how artists like Dagmar Binder and Christine Birkle have impacted the way I work and even my desire to start felting in the first place.

We all have our favorite people that we follow and admire. For me, one of these incredible influences is Zsofia Marx.

Zsofia needs no introduction. I’m sure you’ve seen her beautiful hats and her amazing vessels, that she has recently created in collaboration with Ellen Bakker.

They’re currently being exhibited in the Netherlands, in an exhibition that runs until September 20^th. I wanted to share this with you today for three reasons: to share my admiration for Zsofia’s work, to call your attention to the exhibition (if you live close enough to visit), but above all, to share Zsofia’s post about the lessons she learned from exhibiting Artful Objects.

I found it fascinating, not only because of what she says about exhibiting work, but because it made me think about how much happens after we finish making something. How we select, arrange and give space to our work can completely change the way it’s experienced.

And I think there are some beautiful lessons here, whether you’re exhibiting your work, preparing a market display, photographing your pieces or simply trying to understand your own body of work better.

So, rather than summarizing it myself, and running the risk of not doing it justice, I thought I’d send you straight to Zsofia’s post.
