What’s inside FELTING SOFT HATS – THE BERET?

Aug 28, 2025

I’ve spent years felting berets and trying to get them to be soft and wearable. Along the way, I tested materials, methods, and fiber ratios until I found what I was looking for.

The course FELTING SOFT HATS – THE BERET distills those experiments, based on trial and error, into a clear, practical system that you can easily follow at home, without the frustration of wasted wool or disappointing results.

Plus, I’ve included technical bonuses to help you strengthen your foundations and troubleshoot common struggles.

So, what’s really inside the course?

Module 1 – Introduction

  • In this module I go into why I created this class, which was born out of my frustration with making berets that were always too stiff.
  • I show you the exact experiments I did until I finally achieved the results I was looking for. You get to see exactly which fibers and layouts I tried, why they failed, and how I made my felt better step-by-step. I’m showing you this in so much detail, so that you are able to make better decisions about fiber type and amount, as well as layout in the future.
  • I give you a list of recommended suppliers all over the world.
  • We go into how to measure the head, the shrinkage rate for your berets and how to design your templates.

Bonuses – Samples 1 and 2

Why do we go through sampling before we work on the berets? This way, you get to experiment with the exact wool-viscose ratios, as well as the different layouts to see how the results change.

Bonus – The layout methods

Understanding the different layout methods we use in the class, as well as the elasticity you can get from each of them will help you make decisions for your future wet felted projects.

Bonus – Felt density

We’ll talk a little bit about felt density, a concept that can help improve all your felting projects.

Bonus – Sanding

If you don’t use a sander yet, you aren’t sure how to work with it safely or which brand of sander to purchase, I have you covered with a bonus that goes into all these details.

Bonus – Beret sizes

When you finish this class, you’ll be able to make any type of beret for any size you want. For that, we’ll be looking into the possibles sizes of a beret and how to suit them to different face types.

Module 2 – The classic French beret

This module covers the step-by-step process of felting a soft, but firm beret, as well as how to calculate the size for the head opening without having to cut your felt.

Module 3 – The soft painter’s beret

This module offers you an alternative beret, much softer and drapier than the first one. The key here is to understand how you can use the exact same materials to produce a very different felt by changing some of the felting techniques.

Bonus – How to iron the beret

I’ll show you how you can iron and shape your beret, as well as how to easily make the perfect tool for shaping (not only the pieces in the class, but also other sculptural felted pieces).

Wrap up

As we wrap up, we’ll look into different ways you can expand what you’ve learnt in this class.

By the time you finish the course, you’ll be able to:
✔ Confidently design and felt berets that drape luxuriously
✔ Reproduce your desired size accurately, every time
✔ Apply density, layout, and fiber-blending techniques to future projects
✔ Add visual richness and impact with color
✔ Expand your creativity by learning to work with viscose
