Wet felting with a sander: how long is too long?
May 18, 2026If you use a sander for wet felting, you're probably placing it on the fiber not longer than 10 to 15 seconds. Am I right?
But have you ever wondered why? And what would actually happen if you left it on for longer?
I had the same question, and so did one of my students. I confess I’ve only been following instructions, and what I’ve heard “you should do”. But I didn’t really know why. So, I decided to test it.
What did I expect?
My feeling was that leaving the sander on for too long would cause holes in the layout. The machine is powerful and the fiber is still very fresh at that stage, so it seemed logical. But I'd never actually tested it. Until now.
What actually happened?
The results surprised me a little. In this week's video, I walk you through the whole experiment, including what I observed at each stage and what it means for your own sanding practice.
So, should you stick to the 10-second rule?
